Although the blockbuster movie was nominated for the top honors at both the Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Awards this year, it failed to feature in the Oscars Best Picture racePublished on January 29, 2019 01:32PM EST Awkwafina isn’t sweating Crazy Rich Asians‘ Oscar snub. Although the blockbuster movie was nominated for the top honors at both the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Awards this year, it failed to factor into the best picture race at the upcoming Academy Awards. But the star of the movie — who played Constance Wu‘s hilarious best friend Peik Lin — said that’s not what matters most about the comedy. “I don’t really know the exact reasoning behind it, but yeah, of course it would have been cool,” Awkwafina said about about the oversight while promoting a new project at the Sundance Film Festival. “But we did have an amazing awards run. We were up for tons of awards and we actually won the Critics’ Choice best picture…we’re very grateful for the attention that it’s gotten.” She added, “I don’t think we anticipated it to be nominated for any awards, so the fact that it got as much recognition as it did, I think that’s enough.” Cast of Crazy Rich Asians at the PEOPLE’s SAG Awards Gala.Colin Young-Wolff for People Crazy Rich Asians is the first studio film since 1993’s The Joy Luck Club to feature an entirely Asian cast. Wu opened up to PEOPLE ahead of the movie’s August release about the progress that Crazy Rich Asians represents in Hollywood. “I loved the story and thought, ‘I could play this.’ But it seemed impossible,” Wu said. “I had never seen an Asian-American woman be the leading role in a movie or saw a face that looked even close to mine that Hollywood deemed worthy of its own fairy-tale story.” The announced sequel — based on China Rich Girlfriend, the second book by Crazy Rich Asians author Kevin Kwan — will in part focus on the romance between Harry Shum Jr.‘s and Gemma Chan’s characters. One-note fairy godmother type by comparison, but the character is undoubtedly necessary to the fantasy element of the movie. Altogether, Crazy Rich Asians has assembled a stellar cast that is lead exceptionally well by Wu and Golding. Ultimately, all aspects of Crazy Rich Asians come together for an over-the-top, spectacular romantic comedy that provides perfect escapist fantasy. But, of course, the movie isn't without plenty of heart to balance its more fanciful moments. The relationships between Chinese children and their parents, particularly their mothers, is as much at the core of the film as Rachel and Nick's relationship. But these themes - romantic love and familial/motherly love - are universal, and it allows for anyone and everyone to find something relatable in Crazy Rich Asians. The story may be steeped in the very specific culture and setting of Singapore, but it's that specificity that actually makes Crazy Rich Asians all the more universal. In a movie genre that tends to stick to the "norm" (read: straight and white) as much as possible, Crazy Rich Asians brings some much-needed representation for Asian Americans, while proving that stories about people of color can be relatable to everyone. As such, Crazy Rich Asians is for anyone interested in catching a romantic comedy with their friend/friends, date, significant other or partner. It's on the more extravagant end of the genre's escapist fantasy stories, but that makes it all the more fun. Between its humor, romance, and heart, Crazy Rich Asians provides an exceptionally entertaining experience that has something for everyone. There may have been a drop-off in studio rom-coms over the last decade, but the story of Nick and Rachel is poised to bring the genre back in a big way. Truly, Crazy Rich Asians is what studio romantic comedies should be, and hopefully it will help usher in a new era for the genre, bringing more diverse stories to a revival of the big studio rom-com. Trailer Crazy Rich Asians is now playing in U.S. theaters nationwide. It runs 120 minutes and is rated PG-13 for some suggestive content and language. Like you didn’t already do the same for America’s Ass.) Snowpiercer, a sci-fi film that dips into the horror well, is a bleak affair for basically everyone involved, but at least the ruling class gets a dose of what they deserve. If the repressed class is going down, they’re taking the gluttonous rich with them into hell’s icy ninth circle. Here’s a rare entry: a Latvian horror movie. After a rich industrialist lays off hundreds of workers, one of the former employees makes his way to the man’s secluded mansion for some street justice. But instead of fleeing the scene, the killer decides to borrow the life of luxury around him. Wearing the robes of the rich, however, also comes with a price, so consider The Man in the Orange Jacket a kind of communist warning about the perils of joining the vanguard. If you’ve followed Mia Wasikowska’s career even a little bit, it shouldn’t surprise you that she appears twice on this list. In David Cronenberg’s set-Hollywood-on-fire drama from 2014, Wasikowska plays a mysterious woman who ingratiates herself to an emotionally frail movie star, played by Julianne Moore. She becomes her assistant, but it’s all a ruse to get closer to the actress’ New Age-y therapist (John Cusack), whom she holds a deep, dark grudge against. Everything about this movie is either sad or sick or uncomfortable or a combination of all three, and Wasikowska is like some ghostly avenging demon sent to knock down people so insulated by. 6 Top Movies about Rich People. MoviesSully and Ney’tiri have made a family together in Avatar: The Way of Water. A full 13 years have passed since James Cameron dropped his mind-bending epic Avatar on the world, which feels impossible to imagine. More than a full decade since we first were introduced to the super tall, supernatural Na’vi people of Pandora, and we haven’t heard a word from them since. Until now. Avatar: The Way of Water is coming to theaters in the fairly near future, and here’s everything we know so far.Avatar: The Way of Water picks up where the first movie left off.In the 2009 Avatar film, Jake Sully and Ney’tiri made the decision to become a couple despite the fact that he is actually a human who was sent to spy on the Na’vi. By the end of the film, Sully switches sides and protects the Na’vi from evil humans out to steal the unobtanium from Pandora’s rich soil. In the new film, Sully and Ney’tiri have made a family together and are forced to battle an ancient threat in the outer reaches of the planet of Pandora. The first trailer introduces colorful new characters from Pandora. The first trailer for Avatar: The Way of Water sees Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) return with his partner Ney’tiri (Zoe Saldaña) to explore the sea and sky and forests of Pandora. While there was little plot revealed in the trailer, a new group of reef-dwelling people called the Metkayina are introduced and there does appear to be a threat in the forest from another species. But never fear, because Jake Sully reassured Ney’tiri by telling her, “Wherever we go, our family is our fortress.”Avatar: The Way of Water is the first of four planned sequels.Director James Cameron told Entertainment Weekly that Avatar: The Way of Water is the first of four planned sequels to the original Avatar movie. He began writing this movie, much of which will be set underwater, in 2012, and plans to release three more sequels meant to stretch across the entire geography of Pandora. Upon his death, and now these high-brow gallery mavens are going to get their comeuppance. There’s also a hobo robot art piece that kills people, so don’t miss out. Do you know where your tether is? Do you know what they’re doing now? Have you prepared for the coming overthrow? Ready or Not is what I like to call “melee horror,” the kind of genre movie that’s all about lots of people dying in crazy ways and commits as much to action as it does to terror. In it, Samara Weaving plays a brand-new bride forced to participate in an initiation ritual with her new, exorbitantly wealthy in-laws before they fully accept her. She has to pull a card from a deck and whatever game is listed on that card is the one she has to play. Sadly for the bride, she pulls the deadly “Hide and Seek” option, which means the family aims to hunt her down and kill her before the sun rises. Weaving has quickly cemented herself as a melee-horror queen, and Ready or Not is the exact sort of cinematic schadenfreude you want on a Friday night. 30 Great Eat-the-Rich Horror MoviesComments
