Like many language learners, you’ve probably heard about Duolingo, the popular language-learning app that promises to make learning new languages fun and accessible. One of the biggest draws of Duolingo is that it claims to be free. But is that the case? In this article, we’ll examine Duolingo’s pricing model and uncover whether it’s truly free or if hidden costs are involved. Here’s what we’ll cover:What is Duolingo and how does it work?Duolingo’s free features and coursesDuolingo’s paid subscription options (Super Duolingo and Duolingo Max)Can you learn a language effectively using only the free version?Tips for getting the most out of the free Duolingo experienceFrequently asked questions about Duolingo’s pricingThe final verdict – is Duolingo free? What is Duolingo? Before we dive into the pricing details, let’s quickly understand what Duolingo is. Duolingo is a language learning platform that offers courses in over 40 languages, including popular ones like English, Spanish, French, and German, as well as less commonly taught languages. The app uses a gamified approach to learning, with bite-sized lessons, rewards, and a friendly mascot (the Duolingo owl) to keep learners engaged and motivated. Duolingo’s courses cover reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills, making it a well-rounded language learning tool.Duolingo’s Free Features and CoursesNow, let’s address the million-dollar question: is Duolingo truly free? The short answer is yes, Duolingo offers a free version of its language learning platform, packed with features. The Core Free ExperienceAs a free Duolingo user, you get access to:Complete language courses with multiple levels and unitsStories (for select languages)Gamification elements like experience points, levels, and rewardsWeekly challenges and leaguesThe ability to follow and compete with friendsGuidebooks and tips for learningEssentially, Duolingo’s core language learning experience is completely free, and you can access all the lessons, activities, and features without paying a dime.Limitations of the Free VersionThe free version of Duolingo has some limitations:Hearts/Lives System: On the mobile app, you have a limited number of hearts (lives) for each lesson. If you make too many mistakes, you’ll run out of hearts and need to wait for them to replenish or watch ads to regain them.Restricted Practice Modes: Free users have limited access to practice modes like Legendary Levels (extra challenging versions of lessons) and the Personalized Practice Hub.Advertisements: To support the free model, Duolingo displays ads to free users throughout the app. While these limitations can be frustrating for some users, they don’t necessarily prevent you from effectively learning a language on Duolingo for free. They’re more like inconveniences than deal-breakers.Duolingo’s Paid Subscription OptionsIn addition to the free version, Duolingo offers two paid subscription options: Super Duolingo and Duolingo Max. Let’s explore what each of these offers.Super DuolingoSuper Duolingo is Duolingo’s primary paid subscription. Here’s what it includes:No Ads: Super Duolingo provides an ad-free experience.Unlimited Hearts: You’ll never run out of hearts (lives) on the mobile app.Unlimited Legendary Levels: You can attempt Legendary Levels as many times as you want.Personalized Practice: Full access to the Personalized Practice Hub, which tailors practice sessions to your weaknesses.Monthly Streak Repair: If you miss a Each episode features an interesting story from a native speaker with English narration for context. The episodes feature more intermediate language skills and won't apply toward your rank or points in the Duolingo app. They're still enjoyable to listen to and have a similar feel to a feature piece you'd hear on NPR. Plus, when you make an account, Duolingo makes it easy to access it across devices. For example, I can do a quick lesson on my phone, iPad or swap over to PC. The app is also pretty adaptable. For example, if you don't feel like repeating a phrase you can skip the question and the app will keep your microphone off for an hour while using the app.Should you try Duolingo? There are a lot of language learning apps out there to choose from (check out our favorites), and it's OK if Duolingo doesn't fit your learning style. Duolingo doesn't force you to make an account right away and doesn't harangue you about subscribing to the premium tier. In fact, you can access Duolingo content without making an account. You won't be able to save your progress, but it's a great way to test out the service with zero commitment. Is Duolingo Super worth it?The free version of Duolingo and Duolingo Super aren't drastically different, even after the redesign. After a 14-day free trial, Super Duolingo costs $7 a month and Duolingo Super Family -- which supports up to six users -- costs $10 a month. You can also cancel Super and revert to the free version at any time. Duolingo Super levels up your earning experience by supplying unlimited hearts, removing ads, and adding extra features like special mistake practice quizzes and extra mastery quizzes to earn legendary status. In addition, Duolingo says that Plus subscribers help support the free tier for others.Legendary challenges? : r/duolingo - Reddit

The longer you use the app, you'll earn achievement badges and earn gems that serve as in-game currency to enhance the game elements.Along the way, a little green owl named Duo cheers you on and reminds you about completing your daily goal. Duo's "motivational" tactics -- big weepy eyes and "I miss you" notifications -- have earned him a spot in meme culture as well. Duo is always ready to remind you to practice. Video screenshot by CNETAgain, you can have a great experience with Duolingo without paying a dime. The app's free tier is ad-supported and you get five hearts (like lives in a video game) to start. Each mistake you make costs one heart, but you can refill all five for 450 gems. Upgrading to Super Duolingo, the app's premium tier, has unlimited hearts, no ads and more personalized practice. Language lessons for everyone that don't get tediousDuolingo has a streak feature -- like Snapchat -- that provides extra motivation, but it's not where I feel the most pride when using the app. The most rewarding feeling is learning a particularly tricky conjugation, finally getting a question right that I'd missed before, being able to comprehend one of the in-app stories, or understanding a bit of dialogue in a movie. The app features learning units, which break down into lessons like phrases, travel, family, school, emotions, routines, weather and more technical stuff like word tenses. Lessons have five levels -- as you progress, you earn gems and in-game rewards. Exercises get harder and more lessons unlock for future units. Duolingo Stories are now built into your learning path and help with comprehension Shelby Brown/CNETThe lesson icon turns gold when you reach level five, but it doesn't mean you can't go back to it. If you're subscribed to the premium tier, once you hit level five on a lesson, you can do eight more sessions to gain legendary status, which indicates mastery and turns the icon purple. I like that past Duolingo lessons grow with you. For example, I can go back to the very first lesson that covers introductions, but Duolingo won't be giving me softball questions. This makes reviewing old material way less tedious.Besides regular lessons, you can test your knowledge with Duolingo Stories. You can read along, but the story is also narrated so you can hear pronunciation and inflection. After a couple of lines of dialogue, the app will ask a comprehension question, like "what is this character looking for?" If you're unsure of a vocabulary word, you can tap to get a translation and it won't count against your score. Like the regular lessons, if you've already gone through a story once, the next time you do, it'll be a bit more challenging. The stories reiterate the vocabulary words you've learned while putting them into realistic situations. Duolingo also has supplementary podcasts that you can find on most podcast apps. Duolingo storiesDuolingo stories are the ones which are developed for increasing your reading and writing skills in the language. You will see different characters with different sentences coming on the screen. You will either need to translate them or choose the right meaning. Although in starting you will be getting less XP, with time you will get up to 28 XP when you are having tough stories. 3. Audio lessonsAudio lessons are a great way of earning the XP. All you need to do is to listen to them in your free time. You can either hear them in your free time or while doing something. You only need to play the list and that’s it, your lessons will be played automatically and you do not need to do anything. Further, you do not need to type the answer and only speak them. It will not only help you to get the required XP but also help you to save extra time. You must give your answers loudly so that they can hear your voice and mark the right answer.Update: With the current learning path, Duolingo has removed the Audio lessons.4. Timed challengesAccording to me, the most difficult yet exciting challenge on Duolingo is the timed challenge. Duolingo timed challenges are the ones, where I must complete a task running across the time. It is one of the best ways of earning more XP in a shorter duration. Different challenges like Match Madness or ramp-up challenges help you to get more XP. Hack: I always try to avoid listening exercises when I’m in such challenges. When you wait for the sentence to complete, it will take some of your seconds more than it will take to read. 5. Start with beginner lessonsYou can repeat your beginner lessons so that you can get more XP. You can retake the lesson five times, and that too at any time. After retaking them, you will see them turning to the legendary level. 6. Duolingo happy hourUndoubtedly, happy hour always makes me happy. Happy hour is that one hour that gives you 5 more XP for each lesson you complete in that particular hour. I don’t think that there is a reason to hate it. However, you only have a single hour, and, thus try to complete 2-3 lessons within that hour to earn more XP. This hour is generally active in the evening on any day of the week. However, at present, you can keep the settings to notify you about it. If you use the XP boost during this hour you can earn double the amount of XP. However, XP boost works only for 15 minutes and thus you must complete atLegendary not counting : r/duolingo - Reddit
You won’t earn this XP boost if you finish a level – while using an XP Boost.Put another way, I try not to be using an XP boost when I finish a level [lesson 6 out of 6] on a Skill.Put another way, I try not to be using an XP boost when I finish a level [lesson 6 out of 6] on a Skill.Ideally, by the time my first XP Boost [the Early Bird XP] runs out, I can quickly earn another by finishing a level – completing lesson 6 of 6.When I’m lesson 5/6, I don’t finish that level if I am *currently* using an XP Boost. When I “test out” of a level, I do so to earn ANOTHER XP boost.Step 4: Evening – Take a Break at 500 XPUsually at this point, I’m around 500 XP for the day, so I take a break. It’s important to let your brain rest and space out practice time.If I’m not quite to 500 XP on Duolingo, but I don’t want to use a Timed Boost, then I’ll head over to “The League” section and do a few timed trials until I get there. Or I’ll finish reviewing the Skills [doing all the “Hard Practice” options] or do a few lessons in the Practice Hub.Then my brain needs a break! Earning XP fast on Duolingo does require breaks, friend!Step 5: Evening – Alternate Regular Lessons and Practice HubWhen I open Duolingo back up, I’ll basically repeat Step 2 – but I’ll alternate regular lessons with lessons from the Practice Hub.I make sure to activate an “XP Boost” before doing this. Usually the one earned in Step 3.XP Boost ActivatedPractice Hub – [40 XP]New Lesson – [20 XP]Practice Hub – [40 XP]New Lesson – [20 XP]Practice Hub – [40 XP]New Lesson – [20 XP]Practice Hub – [40 XP]New Lesson – [20 XP]Usually, there are a limited number of lessons waiting for me in the Practice Hub, so sometimes I can do 4 or 5, and sometimes 1 or 2.Practice Hub is super clutch for earning XP fast on Duolingo. With this screenshot, i’m trying to show that I switch back and forth between learning new content + reviewing!Step 6: Evening – Finish a Skill or Earn XP Fast through XP BonusOk, so now we’re towards the end. This final step is really excellent for earning XP on Duolingo fast. Usually at this point, I have two options:Finish an entire skill [Achieve “Legendary” Status!]Timed XP ChallengesOption 1: Finish an Entire Skill on Duolingo to Earn XP FastIf there’s an entire Skill I can finish, I only start it if i have an XP Boost to use. Ideally, from Step 7, I’ll be pretty close to earning my third XP Boost of the day. I’ll get my XP Boost, then [if available] I’ll arn the 6 crowns on the final level. Why do I only finish a Skill with an XP boost?Well, each of those crowns is worth 40 – 45 XP – andduolingo xp/legendary glitch - YouTube
