Almost ironic watching all this unfold. FilmStruck had a rumored 100,000 subscribers yet according to Turner and Time Warner this made it a "niche" service. Adding insult to injury, when Warner announced their own streaming site and their three-tier pricing scheme those interested in classic films are expected to pay top dollar. Niche or just willing to pay what they have to in order to gain access to films numerous other streaming services, including Netflix and Hulu find no value in?Criterion is a different animal altogether. When they initially dived into the streaming waters they paired up with Hulu, providing a service that wasn't curated but allowed for their films, many of which remain unreleased on physical media, a dedicated audience. For those already paying for Hulu, this was an added bonus. Even when FilmStruck was running, they were providing films not just from Warner and Criterion, but Fandor (a service catering to arthouse and foreign cinema) all under one price point. With people returning back to traditional bundled cable, as opposed to paying numerous fees for a variety of individual services, is Criterion on its own enough? The answer is yes, if you're looking for something specific. When FilmStruck started it predominately catered to those who were Criterion fans, or were seeking cult, arthouse, and foreign titles. There was an elitism to FilmStruck that wasn't out of the ordinary, but did leave many looking for Hollywood classics wanting. Once TCM started infusing their own content into FilmStruck, many fence-sitters immediately

Towards the end of 2018 classic film fans received a shock to their system when it was announced that FilmStruck, the streaming collaboration between Turner Classic Movies and a consortium of other studios, was closing. The service, which was estimated to have over 100,000 subscribers paying $10.99 a month for access to a wide selection of classic, arthouse, and independent cinema, was meticulously curated by Turner's own group of curators and writers, as well as supported by a slew of prominent directors, including Guillermo del Toro and Edgar Wright. Upon announcing FilmStruck's closure Criterion revealed plans for their own streaming service to continue to provide audiences with access to their rare titles, and on April 8th audiences will get to see what that looks like.Known, once again, as the Criterion Channel, the standalone streaming service will be available in the US and Canada on April 8th and playable on Apple and Amazon TVs, Roku, Android, and iOS platforms. It's touted to have "1,000 culturally significant classic and modern films" along with audio commentary tracks and other bonus content provided by scholars and filmmakers, weekly rotating programming and "15-minute-a-month film school." If you sign up now you'll receive access to the company's "movie of the week," which will be changed every week until April 8th, as well as a discount on the regular $11 a month pricing, a holiday gift certificate, and a free 30-day trial. But is this enough to convince everyone who was a FilmStruck subscriber to jump on-board? Jumped on. For them, it was a way to access the TCM content they'd lost if they weren't cable subscribers. (As of right now TCM and its on-demand services are only available via Sling, Roku, or their Watch TCM app with cable subscription.) The inclusion of TCM and its curated content, similar to their Watch app, gave cord-cutters a reason to spend more money. But as right now the Criterion channel is back where they started, and those still seeking a return to classic Hollywood are left in the cold. This isn't to say Criterion doesn't have their fair share of Hollywood titles, and many of their British films (several of which aren't on physical media) do have that same glamorous vibe, but it's different. There are also questions about the use of curation here. What made FilmStruck great was the emphasis on film fandom. The experts consulted knew their stuff, but were also film fans and writers, many drawn from TCM's own offices. Criterion, regularly called out for the lack of women directors whose work gets released, still skews towards white men. But with classic films being so hard to come by, it's understandable that, for many, this is as good as it's going to get. Short of another collaboration with several studios and TCM, Criterion remains the last great hope for someone who actively appreciates classic cinema. As I mentioned when I wrote about the demise of FilmStruck, studios don't care about saving their classic films.
