The students in Fowler's classes were in grades nine through eleven and were of the ages fourteen through seventeen. The day on which the movie was shown, May 31, 1984, was a noninstructional day used by teachers for completing grade cards. A group of students requested that Fowler allow the movie to be shown while she was completing the grade cards. Fowler was unfamiliar with the movie and asked the students whether it was appropriate for viewing at school. Charles Bailey, age fifteen, who had seen the movie on prior occasions, indicated that the movie had "one bad place in it." Joint Appendix at 291. Fowler rented the video tape at a video store in Danville, Kentucky. The clerk who rented the "R" rated tape to Fowler told her that there was some nudity in the movie during a song called "Young Lust" and warned that she might wish to delete that section. It was the perfect day in Naples, Fla., and I got a front-row seat to some seriously good golf. I’d love to see something with a match play format going forward.Rickie’s birthday surpriseThe fun started on the fist tee at Tiburon when Lexi Thompson presented Rickie Fowler with a cake for his 36th birthday. Props to the LPGA’s media team for picking up the cake, and word on the street is that somebody from their camp went the extra mile and put orange frosting on it themselves.Not only did Fowler get a birthday cake on the first tee, he received yet another cake and balloons when he walked off the 18th green after he and Thompson carded a nine-under 63. Fowler received birthday balloons and cake after his round Claire Rogers I guess if you’re as good at golf as Rickie Fowler is, you get two cakes! Must be nice. Also, fun fact: there were two birthdays in Fowler’s group today. Lexi Thompson’s brother Curtis turned 31 today and was on the bag for his sister at Tiburon. I hope he got at least one cake to celebrate the occasion!Old pals team upOne of my favorite duos this week is that of Allisen Corpuz and Sahith Theegala, who met each other in the parking lot of a junior golf tournament when they were six years old. Their parents have been pals ever since.Theegala joked that their team’s secret weapon this week is their dads. But not for the Portwood asked Fowler to give him the video tape, and she did so. The board viewed the movie once in its entirety and once as it had been edited in the classroom. The board then retired into executive session. Following this executive session, the board returned to open session and voted unanimously to terminate plaintiff's employment for insubordination and conduct unbecoming a teacher. Following her termination, plaintiff Fowler initiated her action in the district court alleging that her First and Fourteenth Amendment rights were violated by her discharge, and that the Kentucky statutes forming the basis for her discharge were unconstitutionally vague or overbroad. She also alleged that the factual findings made in support of her discharge were not supported by substantial evidence. At the bench trial in the district court, Fowler repeated her contention that she believed the movie contained important, socially valuable messages. School officials testified that they objected to the movie because it promoted values which were described as immoral, antieducation, antifamily, antijudiciary, and antipolice. Former World Chess Championship Challenger Nigel Short has written his first book, Winning. The English Chess Federation selected Winning as one of four books under consideration for its 2021 “Book of the Year.” Although Winning did not win, it got a special mention. Like Nigel Short the chess commentator, Nigel Short the chess writer is educational and entertaining.Don’t Stop Me NowEach chapter of Short’s book is named after a song. Quality Chess provides a PDF excerpt from the chapter named after Queen’s Don’t Stop Me Now. Some of its lyrics are “I’m having such a good time. I’m having a ball. (Don’t stop me now).” That’s how I felt when I watched Nigel Short commentate for FIDE on the January 2020 Women’s World Chess Championship. Often, I would stay awake from 11:30 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. to watch live, even though FIDE also archives broadcasts on YouTube.In addition to explaining openings, strategy, tactics, and endgames, Short shared his views without hesitation. For example, he discussed his motion to ban smoking in all FIDE tournament areas, including break areas, and his thoughts on transgender competitors.
